Artificial intelligence is changing the world – but what does it really mean?

Job losses, automation, new technologies: We hear about AI and its effects almost every day. But few realize that it is about far more than the loss of individual professions. What will happen to a society that hands over thinking to machines?

The cognocratic society shows how value creation and the power of interpretation in our society are shifting – away from humans and towards machines.

A wake-up call for anyone who wants to understand what this change is doing to our psyche, economy and culture. And an appeal to not only observe this upheaval, but to actively help shape it – as long as we can still think about it ourselves.

A book for people who not only want to know what is coming – but who we still want to be in it.

What is cognocracy?

The term refers to a form of society in which human thinking is no longer at the center of decision-making, value creation and control – but rather outsourced, machine cognition.

What used to be the preserve of humans – judging, analyzing, prioritizing, finding creative solutions – is increasingly being taken over by systems that are faster, more scalable and statistically more precise than their human creators. Machines recognize patterns, make predictions, influence behaviour – and thus help shape the foundations of our coexistence in real time.

The term cognocrat is deliberately ambiguous: it describes a dominance of thinking – but this thinking is no longer organic, no longer emotional, no longer intuitive. It is data-driven, model-based, external. In a cognocratic society, people live in decision-making spaces co-designed by machines – often without realizing it. They act in digital behavioral spaces that react to them, direct them – and at the same time are beyond their control.

What remains of people when they no longer think – but are thought? And how can they regain their ability to act socially – if they have to think to do so?
